Liu Qi opens Qingdao International Regatta


Liu Qi signals the opening of the event.

(QINGDAO, Aug. 20) -- Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), declared the 2006 Qingdao International Regatta open in Qingdao on Sunday.

Up to 500 sailors from 40 countries and regions took part in the opening ceremony of the regatta.

Qingdao, a port city in east China´s Shandong province, is also the venue for the sailing events for the 2008 Olympic Games and Paralymic Games.

The regatta, slated for August 21-31, features 11 events of nine classes.

Liu, also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), inspected the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center earlier. He gave a thumbs-up for the preparatory work of the regatta.

In his meeting with Shandong and Qingdao leading officials, Liu appreciated the province and city on their successful work and support for Beijing´s preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games.

As a co-host city of the Olympiad, Liu said, Qingdao offers a good opportunity for closer cooperation between Qingdao and Beijing and for their common development. Beijing will cherish the opportunity and draw on Shandong and Qingdao´s experiences in economic development and Olympic preparation.

Liu also toured Haier Group and Tsingtao Beer Company, sponsors of the 29th Olympic Games.
